Government Ends COVID-19 Lockdown

The Government of Nepal ("GON") on July 20, 2020 has made a decision to end the ongoing countrywide lockdown from July 22, 2020 which was initially imposed from March 24, 2020. The GON has also clarified that apart from lockdown restrictions, other measures relating to control, management and treatment of coronavirus ("COVID-19") cases shall remain status quo.

Subject to compliance with the public health and safety protocols issued by Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation ("MOCTC"), following activities shall be allowed to operate from Shrawan 15, 2077 (July 30, 2020):

  • hotels and restaurants (apart from group parties, seminars and other mass gatherings)

  • travel, trekking and mountaineering agencies


Subject to compliance with the public health and safety protocols, following activities shall be allowed to operate from Bhadra 1, 2077 (August 17, 2020):

  • inter and intra district transportation

  • internal and international flights including commercial flights by complying safety guidelines issued by MOCTC

  • training for international sports including its qualifying rounds

  • admission procedure in educational institutions and conduct of examination


Cross border movements either through entry points or open border shall remain restricted till Shrawan 32, 2076 (August 16, 2020). Similarly, educational institutions, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, gatherings, cinema halls, party palace, beauty parlors and salons, fitness centers, swimming pools, religious places, libraries, etc. shall be allowed to function pursuant to further decision of the GON on this regard.

Owing to the decision of the GON, all commercial activities and businesses, which were severely affected by the pandemic, shall now be allowed to operate in full capacity.
